ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷಿನ ಸೆರಾಮಿಕ್ ಶಬ್ದ ಫ್ರೆಂಚ್ ಮೂಲದ್ದು(Ceramique ) ಇವೆರಡಕ್ಕೂ ಮೂಲವಾದದ್ದು ‘Keramic’ ಎಂಬುದು, ಕುಂಬಾರನು ಮಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ಮಾಡಿ ಸುಟ್ಟ ವಸ್ತು ‘Kermo’ ಎಂದರೆ ಗ್ರೀಕ್ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಣ್ಣು ಎಂದರ್ಥ. ಆವೆ ಮಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ಕೈಯಿಂದಾಗಲಿ,ತಿಗುರಿಯಿಂದಾಗಲಿ, ಬೇಕಾದ ಆಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸಿದ್ಧಗೊಳಿಸಿ ಆವಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟು ಸುಟ್ಟ ಕುಂಭ ವಸ್ತುಗಳು ಮಡಕೆ, ಕುಡಕೆ, ಹೆಂಚು, ಇಟ್ಟಿಗೆ, ಪಿಂಗಾಣಿ, ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ, ಗಾಜು ಮತ್ತು ಸಿಮೆಂಟ್ ಕೂಡ ಸೆರಾಮಿಕ್ ಗುಂಪಿಗೆ ಸೇರುತ್ತವೆ.
