ḍa,
NA
is the twelfth letter in the Hindūstānī alphabet. Its sound is very nearly that of our own d in did, done ; and it differs from that to dāl from its beingg utered by applying the tip of the tongue to the roof of the mouth or palate. It is sometimes used instead of dāl, ḍaṅḍ for daṅḍ, a staff, and when not at the beginning of a word, it is frequently converted into ṛ, as taḍā or taṛā, an island. s.
