Ze,

called zā,e mu'jama or zā,e manḳūṭa, the eleventh letter of the Arabic, the thirteenth Persian, and sixteenth in the Hindūstānī alphabets : its sound is that of the English z. In reckoning by abjad it stands for seven. In almanacks it stands for Saturday, and for the sign Scorpion. in Persian poetry it is used with the vowel i for az, zi baski for az baski, inasmuch as. This letter does not occur in the Sanskrit alphabet : hence, in Indian dialects of Sanskrit origin, such as the Hindī and Bengalī, it is generally changed into j, as roj for roz, a day. jīn for zīn, a saddle. a. p. h.
