Lām,

the twenty-third letter of the Arabic alphabet, the twenty-seventh in Persian, and the thirtieth in Hindūstānī. Its sound is that of the English l in live, long. In reckoning by abjad it stands for 30. in Persian and Hindūstānī it is frequently permuted into re, and vice versa, as zarrū for zallū, a leech ; bār for bāl, hair ; dīwāl for dīwār, a wall ; talwār for tarwār, a sword.

a negative or privative particle denoting in Arabic phrases no. not, not at all, by no means, without, as lā ilāha illa-l-lāh, there is no God but God. In composition with other nouns it has the effect of our prefixed particles un-, in as lā ubālī, fearing nothing, insolent, licentious, petulant ; lā-budd or lābuddu, necessarily, infallibly, assuredly. doubtless ; adj. unavoidable ; lā-tu'add, innumerable ; lā-sānī, (lit.) without a second, "cui nullus est secundus," incomparable ; lā-jaram, necessarily, undoubtedly, indispensably ; lā-jawāb, incapable of answering, silenced, speechless, disconcerted ; lā-chār or -chāra (pl. lā-chāragān), without remedy, helpless ; destitute, forlorn, poor. lā-chāragī or lā-chārī, f. forlornness, helplessness, la-ḥāsil, unproductive, profitless. lā-ḥall, difficult, not to be solved, abtruse, indissoluble. lā ḥaul wa lā ḳūwata illā bi-l-lāhi, there is no power nor virtue but in God, i.e., there is no striving against fate or the decrees of Providence. this phrase is repeated by good Musalmāns, in the way of condolence on the occurrence of any astounding calamity. it is said also with a view to drive away evil spirits. lā-kharāj or kharājī, rent-free, exempt from assessment. lāda'wā or lā-da'wī, (lit. no claim) a deed of release, an acquittance in full. lā-dawā, incurable, irremediable. lā-raib, doubtless, unquestionable. lā-zāla, (in prayer) may it never fail. lā-zabān, silent, speechless ; abuse. lā-zawāl, unperishable. eternal. lā-sukhan, silent, taciturn ; m. abuse, improper talk. lā-sharīk, without any partner or associate. lā-shakk, doubtless. lā-'ilāj, beyond cure, without remedy. lā kalām, taciturn, undisputed. lā-kalām bāḳī, an undisputed balance or remainder. lā makān, without place, invisible, God. la-maut, immortal, imperishable, la-nihāyat, endless, interminable. lā wāriṣ, without heirs. lā-wāṛis māl, property to which there is no heir ; hence it escheats to the state. lā-wāriṣī, the condition of being without an heir. lā walad, without offspring, childless. lā yajūz, not allowed, illegal. lā-yazāl or lā-yazal, the Eternal. lā'ya'nī, absurd, obscene, abusive. lā-yuf ham, not to be understood, unintelligible. lā-yamūt, immortal, deathless. a.
