the twenty-sixth letter of the Arabic alphabet, the thirtieth Persian, and the thirty-third Hindūstānī. At the beginning of a word or syllable it generally corresponds in sound to our w. in reckoning by abjad it stands for six. In ephemerides it represents Friday and the sign Libra. Wāw not beginning a word or syllable contributes to form the long vocal sounds o, ū, and au, fully explained in my persian and Hindūstānī Grammars.

the corresponding letter in the Devanāgrī alphabet. In words purely Sanskrit it has the sound of our v. Again the Sanskrit v is frequently changed into b in the modern Hindūstānī and Bengālī ; hence a Hindī word not found under this letter should be looked for under b.
