وٹھا بٹھانا

ऊठाबिठाना

ūṭhā-biṭhānā,

to excite, to stir up, to urge. H.

Transliterate :

the hair on the arms, &c., bristle, pile, nap, down. Ro,eṅ badalnā, n. to become sleek and fat (a horse), to change his coat. S.

Transliterate :

Vāv,

the twenty-sixth letter of the Arabic alphabet, the thirtieth Persian, and the thirty-third Hindūstānī. At the beginning of a word or syllable it generally corresponds in sound to our w. in reckoning by abjad it stands for six. In ephemerides it represents Friday and the sign Libra. Wāw not beginning a word or syllable contributes to form the long vocal sounds o, ū, and au, fully explained in my persian and Hindūstānī Grammars.

Transliterate :

the corresponding letter in the Devanāgrī alphabet. In words purely Sanskrit it has the sound of our v. Again the Sanskrit v is frequently changed into b in the modern Hindūstānī and Bengālī ; hence a Hindī word not found under this letter should be looked for under b.

a copulative conjunction equivalent to our "and, with, but, now :" it is used in connecting words and phrases from the Arabic and Persian. When it merely connects two words it is sounded o, shab o raz, night and day. A. p.

a particle and prefix, generally denoting separation, disjunction. Ascertainment, progress, privation ; and nearly equal to our English prefixes, a-, di-, dis-, e-, ex-, in-, un-, &c., as vi-rakt, averse, indifferent. S.

open (as a door, &c.) ; adv. Again ; back, behind ; prep. (for bā) with, as wā o guftam for bā o guftam, I spoke with him ; interj. An expression of pain alas ! Wā-mānda, tired, fatigued ; remaining behind. P.
