Fe or Fā,

the twentieth letter of the Arabic alphabet, the twenty-third in the Persian, and the twenty-sixth in the Hindūstānī. This letter exists not in Sanskrit, nor in any of the modern dialects of India thence derived ; and in words from the Persian or Arabic the Indians frequently change f into p or ph, as pālez for fālez, a field of melons. Prefixed to Arabic words (with the short a as fa) it denotes and, then, afterwards, as fa-ḳaṭṭ, and that in all, merely, only. Its sound is precisely that of the English f. in reckoning by abjad it stands for eighty.

commencement, exordium ; the first chapter of the ḳur,ān, which being repeated when praying for the souls of the dead, the word comes to mean prayers offered up in the name of saints, &c., and, vulgarly, oblations made to saints, &c. khair kī fātiḥa, at prayer offered up for the welfare of an one. a.

a dove ; name of a colour. Fākhta-uṛ-jānā, n. to be confounded, to faint. Wuh din gaye jo khalīl khān fākhta uṛāte the, the days of khalīl khān's prosperity (or splendour) are gone. P.
