the twentieth letter of the Arabic alphabet, the twenty-third in the Persian, and the twenty-sixth in the Hindūstānī. This letter exists not in Sanskrit, nor in any of the modern dialects of India thence derived ; and in words from the Persian or Arabic the Indians frequently change f into p or ph, as pālez for fālez, a field of melons. Prefixed to Arabic words (with the short a as fa) it denotes and, then, afterwards, as fa-ḳaṭṭ, and that in all, merely, only. Its sound is precisely that of the English f. in reckoning by abjad it stands for eighty.
