called ghaini mu'jama or ghaini manḳūṭa, the nineteenth letter of the Arabic alphabet, the twenty-second Persian, and the twenty-fifth Hindūstānī. This letter is Arabic or Persian, but has no corresponding sound or character in the sanskrit or any of the native dialects of India. it is one of the guttural letters, its sound being that of an aspirated g resembling the Northumberland r., the Musalmāns of India generally sound this letter correctly ; but by most of the Hindūs, especially in Bengal, it is sounded like g hard in go, as gulām for ghulām, a slave. in reckoning by abjad it stands for 1000.
