Che Or Chīm ;

called also jīm-I fārsī or jim-i' ajamī (i.e. the Persian jīm, the Arabs not having it in their language), the seventh letter of the Persian alphabet and the eighth of the Hindūstānī. It sounds like ch in the English words "Cherry, cheek". It is sometimes permuted, 1st, into zh, as kāzh for kāch, glass ; a pine-tree ; 2nd, into z, as pīzishk for pīchishk, a physician or apothecary. 3rd, into sh, as kāshī for kāchī, made of glass : lastly, by the Arabs it is changed into j, and sometimes into ṣ or sh, as kāj for kāch, and ṣīn, China, for chīn, ṣhatranj for chaturang, chess. in reckonin by the abjad it represents three, the same as jīm. h. p.

is the corresponding letter in the Devanagarī alphabet. In Sanskrit it is a symbol for the God Siva, a thief, a tortoise, &c. s.

Chābuk phaṭkārnā, a. to crack a whip. Chābuksawār, m. a horse-breaker, a jockey ; a good rider ; a horse-broker. chābuk-sawārī, f. jockeyship, &c. chābuk mārnā, a. to whip, to lash. p.
