called dāli mu'jama, is the ninth letter of the Arabic alphabet, the eleventh Pers., and thirteenth Hind. Its existence in Persian, expcept as a substitute for dāl, q. v., appears very doubtful, nor does it exist in the Sanskrit and Indian dialects thence derived : it is pronounced by the Arabs like th in the English word thou ; but in Hindūstānī its sound is not to be distinguished from that of ze, which is exactly our own letter z, in reckoning by abjad it stands for 700. h.

a mistress, possessor ; the soul, essence, substance, nature ; the person viewed as the body and soul, in opposition to badan, the material body ; caste. ẕāt-jānā, n. to be outcast. ẕāt-dena, a. to give up one's caste or relinquish the benefits of one's religion by eating, &c. with a person of another sect ; also to give caste, or receive into any sect as a member. ẕal ke gun nikālnā, to act wickedly, to shew the nature of the beast, to exibit the cloven foot. ẕāl-lenā or -mārnā, a. to deprive another of caste, by touching his food, &c. h.
