4th letter of the Arabic alphabet. It does not occur, strictly speaking, in words of Persian or Indian origin. Its sound, among the Arabs, is that of th in the English word thin, but the Persians and Indians give it the sound of s. It is one of the radical letters, never being employed in the formation of derivatives ; and in the reckoning by abjad it stands for 500 When persian words are introduced into Arabic writings, this letter is sometimes used instead of te or sīn, as Kayūmarṣ for Kayūmart, and Tahmūraṣ for Tahmūras. s.
