ن
Nūn,
NA
the twenty-fifth letter of the Arabic alphabet, the twenty-ninth of the Persian, and the thirty-second Hindūstānī : it is one of the dental letters, and has the sound of the English n, with the following exceptions : the letter nūn has a very soft nasal sound in plural terminations in āṅ, eṅ, īṅ, and oṅ, and in the terminations in ūṅ and eṅ, of the aorist and imperative of verbs ; it has also this nasal sound in the middle of some words, as muṅh, the face, haṅsnā, to smile, &c, for which no rule can be laid down : in this dictionary the nasal sound of n is always indicated by ṅ : when nūn precedes be or pe it has the sound of m, as mimbar, a pulpit (for minbar), sampat, prosperity, for sanpat, (as is the case in Greek an Latin). In reckoning by abjad, the letter nūn stands for 50 ; in almanacks it expresses the conjunct aspect of the stars ; finally, the letter nūn with the short a (as na) prefixed to verbs renders the sense negative, as bolā, he spoke, na-bolā, he did not speak.
