called ṣād I muhmala or ṣādi ghair manḳūṭa, the fourteenth letter of the Arabic alphabet, the seventeenth Persian, and the twenteith Hindūstānī. Strictly speaking, this letter is purely Arabian or Semitic, but in a few Persian words it has, in modern times, been substituted for the original sīn, to distinguish, such words from others of a different signification, as ṣad originally sad, one hundred, and shaṣt originally shast, sixty (to prevent their being confounded with sad, a wall, and shast, an aim) : it has no corresponding letter in the Sanskrit alphabet, and in Persia and India its pronunciations is hardly distinguishable from that of sīn ; but among the Arabs its sound is stronger than that of the latter, and with a mixture of w. in reckoning by abjad its value is ninety. it is used as an abbreviation for ṣafar, the name of the second month in the Arabian kalendar. Also, being the initial of the title ṣuba-dār, q. v., it is usually affixed by him as a cypher to zamīndārī grants, as a mark of authentication. a.
