muhmala, and rāe ghair manḳūṭa, is the tenth letter in the Arabic, twelfth in the Persian, and fourteenth in the Hindustānī alphabets. In reckoning by abjad it stands for 200. its sound is that of r as pronounced by the Scotch and Irish ; that is, it is much more marked than the English r. it is interchangeable with lām : as dajra for dajla, the river Tigris ; tarwār for talwār, a sword. in Hindi, besides lām it is also interchanged with ṛa ; as daṛaknā for daraknā, to split. in almanacks it is the astronomical character for the moon, and in dates it denotes the month rabi'u-l-awwal. a. h. p.
