called shīni mu'jama or shīni manḳūṭa, is the thirteenth letter of the Arabic the sixteenth of the Persian, and the nineteenth of the Hindūstānī alphabets. Its sound is that of sh in English, or ch (as cheval) in French, and of sc (as scimia) in Italian : in reckoning by abjad its value is 300 : it is used as an abbreviation for the word shamāl, the North.
