Jīm or jīm-i-tāzī,

the fifth letter of the Arabic alphabet, the sixth in the Persian, and the seventh in the Hindūstānī. It has the sound of j in judge. In Arabic it is a radical letter. In enumeration by abjad it stands for the number three. It is sometimes used ; 1st, for sh, as kāj for kāsh, would that ! 2nd, for g (particularly in conformity to Arabic pronunciation), as faranj for farang Europe ; 3rd, for the final imperceptible he, as fīrozaj for fīroza, a turquoise. Again, for j are used, 1st, t, as tārāt, for tārāj, plunder ; 2nd, zh, as kazhdum for kajdum, a scorpion ; 3rd, g, as akhshīg for akhshīj, contrary. In some rare instances it is redundant, as debāj for debā, brocade.

is the corresponding letter in the Devanāgarī alphabet. It is used for z, in such Arabic and Persian words as have found their way into the Hindī dialect, thus, hājirī for ḥāẓirī, breakfast. In many words borrowed from the Sanskrit, j is substituted for y, particularly in the dialects of Bengal. Tirhoot, &c. When added to a pure Sanskrit substantive it denotes born, sprung, or produced from such substantive, as andaj, a bird, the egg-born. from anḍa ; vārij, the lotus, lit, sprung from water.
