Pāras-Patthar, Pāras-Patthal,

the philospoher's stone. The pāras patthar, according to Hindū legends, was a stone which, on touching any metal, immediately converted it into gold. It was found in ancient times by a grasscutter, who accidentally touching it with his scythe, was astonished to find that implement turned into gold. it then found its way into the hands of the rājā of that part of the country, who one day, in a fit of generosity, presented this invaluable stone to a Brāhman. the Brāhman, not knowing the virtue of the gift, and being displeased at receiving a present apparently so worthless, threw the stone into the Nerbudda. when he was informed of what he had done, struck with shame and remorse, he plunged into the river in order to recover it if possible, but the water was so deep, that he could not reach the bottom. that part of the Nerbudda is said to be unfathomable, hence, unfortunately, no man has, ever since, found the stone aforesaid (Binning). s.
