In Sanskrit dakṣhina signifies south or right, because, according to the Hindūs, the earth, the navel of which corresponds to Hindūstān, has its head to the west, its feet to the east, the right side to the south, and the left to the north ; or perhaps the term has arisen from the position of eastern people in adoration of the rising sun. In Arabic, the word shamāl denotes north, or left, and this agrees with the manner in which the Roman augurs determined the regions of the heavens, according to Livy. It may be further stated, that in the Gaelic dialects south and north are synonymous terms with right and left respectively. s.
