Dictionary of Manipuri Medical Terms (Manipuri-English)

খিগৎপা
(Khigatpa): Grin = The state of setting teeth of upper and lower jaws together with drawing/ pulling out the lips in the forced opening way to keep up the pain/derision.

খিরুম-খৌরুম তৌবা
(Khirum-Khourum Touba): Feverishness = The condition of being feverishness with the feeling of coolness or lower in temperature of the body even when the one is in great bodily heat and about to quickening the pulse then in normal.

খীঙ-খীং লাউবা
(Khing-Khing Laoba): Agile/Nimble = Being in the healthy condition so as to have the ability/ capability to move, change, go, etc. in doing lively works/ functions, etc. or activeness in activities.

খুউ/খুকলু
(Khu-Khuklu): Knee = Joint half-way down the leg, in which the lower thingbone (Femur) articules with the upper end of Shinbone (tibia) protected by the kneecap (Patella). The ends of the bones are both covered first by cartilage and then by lubricated synovial membrane of a bursa attached to the patella. Knee-jerk = The reflex kick of a leg (on which no weight is being put on the parts below the knee) when the tendon (tough, white fibrous cord that connects muscle to the bone) just below the kneecap is tapped sharply. The reflex action does not involve the brain but happens to be the result of `massege emergency` delivered to the spinal cord by the nerve endings that register the degree of stretch in the tendon. Knee joint = Joint where the femur and tibia are joined covered by kneecap.

খুউ কাং
(Khu-Kang): Kneecap = Patella = It is a disc of bone that protects and supports the front of the knee- joint held in position by the tendon or the quadriceps femoris (four headed lower part/end of femur or thighbone) muscle in the upper leg.

খুংবা
(Khungba): Sterility = The state of being biological incapability of producing offspring. See `Akhungba` above.

খুজা কায়বা
(Khuja Kaiba): Cramp = Spamodic contraction of muscle involuntarily and to feel much pain. See `Uchek-khong houba`

খুজেং
(Khujeng): This term denotes both the Ankle and the wrist. (i) Ankle = The part of the body where the foot is connected to the leg or the hinge joint between the leg and foot. It consists of talus (the major bone among the seven bones of tarsus or ankle bones and this talus articulates with the bones of lower leg) which projects into a socket formed by the lower ends of the tibia (shinbone) and fibula( the thinner shinbone). So ankle means the whole region of the ankle joint including the tarsus and the ends of the libia and fibula. (ii) Wrist - Carpus = The part of the body where the hand is joined to the foream. It is this joint that allows the hand to move independently of the arm. It consists of 8 bones, four of which articulate the two bones of the foream (radius and ulna) and four which articulate with the bones of the hand (the metacarpels).The bones are covered in membrane and ligament (band of shealth of tough fibrous tissue which connects two or more bones) and the whole joint is arched over with a thick band of connective tissue called the retinaculum. This joint is easily fractured and sprained.

খুজিল
(Khujil): (i) Nail = Unguis = The layer of keratin (nitrogenous protein with high surphur contents) on the surface of the tips of the finger and the toes. (ii) Nail = a horny structure, composed of keratin (one of a family of proteins, that are the major constituents of nails, hair and the outermost layer of the skin. The cytoplasm of epithelial cells including keratino cycles, contains a network of keratin filaments), formed the epidermis on the dorsal surface of each finger and toe. The exposed part of the nail is body, behind which is the root. The whitish crescent shaped area at the base of the body is called the lunula. Growth of the nail root by division of the germinative layer of the underlying epidermis (which forms part of the matrix). The growing of nail slides forward over the nail bed. The fold of skin that lies above the roof is the nail fold: folds of skin on either side of the nail are the nail walls. the epidermis of the nail fold that lies next to the nail root is called the eponychium (forming the cutice at the base of the nail). Anatomical name is `Ungius`. Nail biting = Obsessive chewing of the finger nails usually as a sign of stress (Physical/ mental overexertion or importance, emphasis or weight laid on or attached to something). Nail Scissors = Nail cutter = Instrument of special curved fashion in arch-form for cutting nails for human nature.

খুজৈ
(Khujei): Shank = The part of the body in the lower leg extending from below the knee down to the head/top of the ankle. It contains skin, the bony part on the front and the calf, the fleshy part on the rear while makes up mainly of tibia and fibula in bones.
