Dictionary of Manipuri Medical Terms (Manipuri-English)

পুমশিল হৌবা
(Pumshil Houba): Alopecia toatis = it is the loss of all the hair, due to an autoimmune condition; in some 70% of cases it regrow within a few year.

পঙথবা
(Pangthaba): Numbness = the state of being a person`s body having dismished power of sensation/motion or deprived of completely or partially or to some degree of sensation or loss of feeling. (II) Unconsciousness = the condition/state of being in/with the deepest, inaccessible level of the psyche in which are present in dynamic state repressed impulses and memories or the person/animal in the state of insensibility, characterized by the loss of awareness of the external environment and inability to respond to sensory stumuli. (III) Paralysis = the state/condition of a temporary on permanent loss of muscular function or sensation in any part of the body or the whole body usually caused by nerve damage, e.g. as result of disease/injury or - muscle weakness that varies in its extent, its severity and the degree of spasticity or flaccidity according to the nature of the underlying disease and its distribution in brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves or muscles.

পা
(Pa): Eye-lash = the row or one of the hairs, that edge(s) the eyelid or any of the upper short protective hairs that grow(s) from the edge of the upper and lower eyelids. They are often shortened to lash (an eyelash).

পাউতাক
(Pautak): Advice = suggestion about what should be done or should not be done in course of the therapeutic treatment of a disease/illness.

পাখঙ
(Pakhang): Bachelor = an unmarried man or a male human being who attain his adulthood with the development of all the reproductive organs but not yet having any mating with a female in the socio-cultural and politico-legal norms.

পাৎপা
(Patpa): Ulcer = a break in the skin extending to all its layers or a break in the mucous membrane lining the alimentary tract that fails to heal and is often accompanied with/by inflammation of/among many of types of skin ulcer, the most common is the Venous/Hypostatic ulcer of the leg, known correctly as a VARICOSE ulcer, which is caused by increased venous pressure and usually occurs in older women. For ulcer of the alimentary tract the following are worth to mention :- Aphthous ulcer = aphthee = a small ulcer occuring singly or in group in the mouth as white/red spots : their cause is unknown. Treatment is with topical tetracycline or topical corticosteroids. Duodenal ulcer = an ulcer in the duodenum caused by the action of acid and pepsin on the duodenal lining (mucosa) of a susceptible individual. It is usually associated with an increased output of stomach acid. Infection of the atrium of the stomach with Helicobacter pylori is almost always present.Symptoms include pain in the upper abdomen, especially when the stomach is empty which often disappears completely for weeks or months. Vomiting may occur. Complication include bleeding, perforation and obstruction due to scarrings. Symptoms are relieved by antacid medicines, most ulcers heal if treated by an antisecretory drug, or if H. pyleri is eradicated by combination of a proton-pump inhibitor (or an H2-receptor antagonist) and antibiotics. Gastric ulcer = an ulcer in the stomach, caused by the action of acid, pepsin and bile on the stomach lining(mucosa). The out of the stomach acid is not usually increased. Taking NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) or cortico steriods are predisposing factors. Symptoms include vomiting and pain in the upper abdomen soon after eating and such complications are bleeding, perforation and obstruction due to scarring may occur. Symtoms are relieved by antacid medicines but most ulcer heal if treated by an antisecretory drug. Surgery may be required if teh ulcer fails to heal. Peptic ulcer = a breach in the lining (mucosa) of the digestive tract produced by digestion of the mucosa by pepsin and acid. This may occur when pepsin and acid are present in abnormally high concentrations or when some other mechanisms reduced the normal protective mechanisms of the mucosa ; bile salt may play a part, especially in stomach ulcers. A peptic ulcer may be gound as the followings. Oesophageal ulcer = which is associated with reflux Oesophagitis (infammation of oesophagus). Gastric ulcer = as cited above. Jejunal ulcer = Zollinger - Ellison syndrome = which a rare disorder in which there is excessive secretion of gastric juice due to high level of circulating gastrin which produced by a pancreatic tumour or an enlarged pancreas. The high levels of stomach acid cause diarrhoea and peptic ulcers which may be multiple in unusual site (i.e jenumum). Dendritic ulcer = a branching ulcer of the surface of the cornea caused by herps simplex virus. Dendritic ulcers tend to reoccur because the virus lied ormant in the tissue, years may elapse between the attacks. Tropic ulcer = ulcer caused by lack of blood (such as a bedsore) Varicose ulcer = ulcer in the legs as a result of bad circulation and varicose viens.

পাত্থোকপা
(Patthokpa): Ulceration = condition where ulcer develops or development of an ulcer. Ulceration colitis = severe pain in the colon with diarrhoea and ulcers in the rectum. The cause is not know.

পাদোংবা
(Padongba): Coitus = sexual intercourse, see `Nu`

পাম্বোম
(Pambom): (I) Arm = one of the limb or part of the body which goes from the shoulder to the hand, formed of the upper arm, the elbow and the forearm. Arm sling = a sling made of cloth attached around the neck, used to support an injured arm. (II) Upper arm = The part of the arm from the shoulder to the elbow. The upper arm has the strong bone named Humerus.the head of the humerus fits into glenoid cavity and articulated with scapula at the shoulder joint while its lower end articulates with ulna and a part of the radius.

পাম্বোম মরূ
(Pambom - Maroo): Deltoid = a thick triagular muscle that covers the shoulder joint. It is responsible for raising the arm away from the side of the body. Deltoid tuberosity = raised part of the humerus to which the deltoid muscle attached.
