Dictionary of Manipuri Medical Terms (Manipuri-English)

খজাই
(Khajai): Cheek = Either side of face below the eyes, forming the fleshy lateral wall of the mouth or one of the two fleshy parts of the face on either side of the nose. Cheekbone = Zygomatic/ Molar bone = cheek bone which forms the prominent part of cheek and the bottom of the orbit or bone in the face beneath the eye sockets.

খজাই কূৎপা
(Khajai Kutpa):Dimple= A small hollow, especially in the skin of the cheek (Chin or in babies at the knees and elbows).

খদাং
(Khadang): Chin= Bottom or jutting/protruding part of the face below the mouth or the part of lower jaw below/of the mouth.

খদাং কোই
(Khadang Koi): Beard= The hair growing on the chin and neck of man.

খদাংগী শরূ
(Khadangi Sharoo): Mandible= the bone in the chin, known under the Scientific/Zoological name of mendible or lower jaw bone.It consists of a horseshoe shaped body. The upper surface of which bears the lower teeth and two vertical parts (Rami).

খদাংগী হং
(Khadangi Hang): Mandibular fossae = the socket in the skull into which the ends of the mendible or lower jawbone fit.

খনাউ
(Khanao): Throat = (i) Top part of the tube called gullet/ oesophagus which goes down from the mouth to the stomach.(ii)Front part of the neck below the chin. Sore throat = Condition where the mucous membrane in the pharynx is inflammed (sometimes because the person has been taking too much but usually of an infection) The throat carries both food from the mouth and air from the nose and mouth. It divides into the oesophagus which takes food to the stomach and the traches (wind pipes) which takes air into the lungs.

খনাউ চাফাৎপা
(Khanao Chaphatpa): Sore throat = Oesophageal ulcer, see `Khounau`

খনাউ তেংখল
(Khanao Tengkhal): Tonsil = Palatine tonsil = Area of lymphoid tissue at the back of throat in which lymph circulates and protects the body against germs entering through the mouth. Lingual tonsil = Lymphoid tissue on the top surface of the back of the tongue. Pharyngeal/Adenoidal tissue = Lymphoid tissue at the back of the throat where the passage from the nose joins the pharnyx.

খনাউ চরম
(Khanao Charam): Gullet = Oesophagus = the muscular tube which food and drink passes/swallowed from the mouth to stomach, Gravity provides the main motive force but these are also some muscular movements (peristalis) which sqeezes the swallowed material down towards the stomach. A strong sphincer at the end of the gullet is there to prevent the food from being regurgitated.
