Dictionary of Manipuri Medical Terms (Manipuri-English)

ধাতু
(Dhatu): Syphilis = chronic sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, resulting in the formation of lesions throughout the body. Bacteria usually enter the body during sexual intercourse, through the mucous membranes of the vagina or urethra, but they may rarely be transmitted through wound in the skin or scratches. Bacteria may also pass from an infected pregnant woman across the placenta to the developing fetus, resulting the disease being present at birth. It is the other name of Taki, see `Taki`

(Dhatu Nai-Taba): Gonorrhoea = Gonoriya, see `Gonoriya`

ধাতু নুংশং
(Dhatu Nung-Shang): Haemorrhoids = Piles = This is common term of the piles or haemorrhoids = (I) the disease of the enlargement of the normal spongy blood-filled cushions in the internal and external walls surrounding skin of the anus. (II) This diseases/sufferings are of the painfully distended veins around the inside and outside of the anus or small blood tumour (dilation of vein) near anal orifice. The diseases can be divided into three types according to the degree of suffering of the enlargement an extension of the blood-filled cushion and the skin in and around the anal orifice, as :- First degree/stage of internal haemorrhoids remain the affection inside the anus and may bleed during defecation but have no other symptom. It is usually the consequence of prolonged constipation or occasionally, diarrhoea. The uncomplicated haemorrhoids are seldom painful. Second degree haemorrhoids protruded the affected area beyond the anus as an uncomfortable swelling but return spontaneously and sometimes required manual pressure to return them inside. It is the beginning of the external haemorrhoids. Third degree haemorrhoids remain outside the anus and always need to be returned by manual pressure. First and second degree haaemorrhoids may respond to bowel regulation using high fibre diet with faecal softening agents. It bleeding persist an irritant fluid (a sclerosing agent) may be injected around the surrounding swollen cushion to make them shivel up. Other effective treatments are infrared coagulation and application of elastic bands. The third degree haemorrhoids often required surgery, especially if they become strangulated (producing serve pain and further enlargement).

ধাতু নুংশিৎ
(Dhattu Nungshit): Stomatitis = a suffering from the ulcer and cleft of the tongue, lips and mucous membranes inside the mouth due to the inflammation caused from the oesophageal disorder or oesophagitis.
