Indispensible; necessary; what must; Karam kā likhā aṭal hai. Aṭal chhatr,n. the everlasting golden umbrella (the emblem of royalty or godhead). Bol, aṭal chatr kī jaё, A religious cry. Say, long live the eternal Umbrella, long may it live ! Aṭal ho jāna, v.n. To eat till one cannot move.1. Khā pi-ke aṭal ho gaё 2. Bas, Lāl ji, aṭal ho gaё. Brij. Enough, Sir, (I am so full that) I cannot move. 3. Achchee bhaё aṭal, prān gaё nikal. Prov. Bravely gorged and given thy life. Tis proverb is applied jestingly to the Chobas of Mathurā who are credited with eating to excess. The charity of feeding the poor is outdone in the custom of inducing each man to eat till he bursts, by the offer of a money reward, rising from 4 annas up to a gold mohur for every sweet - meat eaten on full stomach.
